STAR Technology
When running complex and robust software, network speed and stability are critical.
When you run the STAR EAM System in a STAR Cloud or any other preferred Cloud, we make use of RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol). RDP is a network communications protocol developed by Microsoft, which allows users to remotely connect to another computer. It is an extension of the T.120 protocols that are standards of the ITU (International Telecommunications Union).
With client software that uses RDP, one can connect to any computer that runs Windows or another compatible operating system. For instance, if you want to access your PC from a laptop or other device, using RDP you can connect to the remote PC, view the content on the remote display, and interact as if working locally on that machine.
RDP is available for Windows, Linux, Unix, Mac, iOS, Android, and other operating systems.
STAR offers both Microsoft Terminal Server and Citrix.
RDP/Terminal Services is widely used and growing. Microsoft and other companies, like Citrix, continue to invest heavily in this technology for mission-critical application software. More powerful development tools are available for applications running in a persistent state than are available for web-based applications.
Why Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)
- Stabile
RDP is fast and controlled, and it is predictable in performance. If an interruption in the network occurs, the application will continue to process using several resources, thus it will not affect the terminal services session running the application. - Reliable
With RDP, there is a direct connection from the server to the remote device. This connection always remains open to allow requests to be sent back and forth without interruptions. As a result, speed and reliability are not affected when a new request is made.
– Note that if you require a more secure private connection over a Wide Area Network (WAN), RDP supports VPN connections. - Available
The RDP software comes standard with all PCs and thin clients, and it is available on all mobile devices, such as smartphones, tablets, etc. - Effective
RDP has a very small payload between the server and remote device since all processing is done on the server. This means you can easily use very slow network connections back to your server location, wherever that may reside. This can save a lot of money.
